Some FAQ’s
Do I need a 1.5KW Portable Power Station or will the 1 KW be sufficient?
1.5KW Power Stations can handle roughly four times as much load (total wattage) as 1KW Power Stations. It contains double the battery capacity and runs at 24 V, while the 1 KW runs at 12V. Your needs will determine the size of the power station you will want to acquire.
Does the Portable Power Station run a refrigerator?
It depends on your fridge.
Older fridges surge to 7 x times the wattage on the fridge when started. This will overload your power station. Newer fridges with a soft start do not surge as they start up and can be run depending on the wattage of the fridge. The Portable Power Station will probably run your camping fridge.
How long will the battery last?
It depends on the Wattage of the appliances you want to keep on. Most appliances have a fixed load, but in the case of televisions, it can vary greatly.
How to determine which appliances can run on the Portable Power Station
Check the wattage of the appliances you want to keep on and use the following formula:
Battery Time (in hours) =
Battery Capacity (in Ah) X Input voltage (V) / Total Load (in Watts)
(Battery time equals battery capacity times Input voltage divided by total load)
You want 3 LED lights, a cell phone, a Wi-Fi router and a laptop to run on the Portable Power Station.
Calculate your total load:
- 3 LED lights = 3 x 4W = 12 Watt
- 1 Cell Phone = 1x 5W = 5 Watt
- 1 Wi-Fi router = 1 x 20 W = 20 Watt
- 1 Laptop = 1 x 20 Watt
- 1 TV (eg 50inch LED) = 100 Watt
So, the total load in your case is 12 + 5 + 20 + 20+ 100 = 157 Watts.
For the 1KW Portable Power Station
Let us apply all these values in the above-said battery backup time formula.
Running time (in hours) = 100 x 12 / 157 = 7.6 hours
So, your inverter battery will last around 7.6 hours to keep your needed appliances running.
The above calculation is perfect on paper. But in a real-time scenario, the inverter’s efficiency plays a vital role in its backup time. The better the inverter efficiency, the more the backup time.
